STAGE 1: SEATED)

Consult the "seated stage" notes in posture 1 regarding sitting / chairs.

Right Hand

Inhale

Make a fist with the right hand and draw the fingers into the palm and place the thumb across the curled fingers. The "hole" is on top - imagine you're holding a flag pole vertically. Draw the first close to your right hip.

Exhale

Move the fist out and forward to the front of your body about mid chest height.

Inhale

Open the fist and straighten the fingers so the palm is facing left. Simultaneously make a fist with the left hand and Draw the first close to your left hip.

Exhale

Move the left fist out and forward to the front of your body about mid chest height; it continues to moves past the right palm - which is next to it and facing left. The right palm travels towards the body and comes to rest just above the left inner elbow.

Inhale

Open the left fist and straighten the fingers. Simultaneously move the right hand back to the right hip, making a fist again. The left palm is now open, facing right, almost at arms length, in front of the chest.

Exhale

Move the right fist out and forward again etc.

Repeat this left and right sequence several times.

Consult the "important points" in exercise one regarding "moving in water".

STAGE 2: STANDING STATIC

Stand with feet at shoulder width and parallel, toes facing directly forward. Legs should be straight with Knees slightly bent.

Perform the torso movements as in the seated stage while keeping the lower half of the body - including the hips - still. Only move the arms and torso.

STAGE 3: STANDING WITH FOOTWORK

METHOD 1: "SMALL STEPPING"

Refer to the "Small Stepping" directions in the footwork section.

METHOD 2: "LUNGING BOW POSTURE"

Refer to the "Lunging-Bow" directions in the footwork section

APPLICATION

Applying the footwork to the posture:-

Stand with feet at shoulder width and parallel, toes facing directly forward. Legs should be straight with Knees slightly bent.

Perform the torso movements as in the seated stage with these additional steps:-

As you punch with the right fist take a step forward with the left foot. As you bring the left hand back to the left hip (to prepare for a left punch) move your left foot back under your body. As you punch with the left fist step forward with the right foot.

The opposite foot to the punching fist steps forward.


NOTES

Punching posture is taken from the traditional Yang style Tai Chi form.
