17.1 INHALE: PREPARE TO TAKE OAR FROM WATER, RIGHT

Footwork

Place the weight on the left foot and move the right foot back close to the left foot, toes facing south.

Wand / Arms

Simultaneously, draw the right tip of the wand upwards and backwards towards the right of the body as your right hand slides back to the right 'home’ position. The left hand acts as a pivot as the right tip moves back in an arc, holding the left tip in the centre of the body, about 15 centimeters from the abdomen. As the right tip descends to the right side of the body, the left hand moves to the left horizontally. The position ends with the wand horizontal in home position. [Figure 119].

17.2 EXHALE: LIFT OAR FROM WATER, RIGHT

Footwork

Take a small step to the south east with the left foot and move the right foot up behind it, toes facing south.

Wand / Arms

Simultaneously slowly thrust the left tip up to the left diagonal; south east, pushing with the right hand and loosening the left hand’s grip on the wand so it slides up to 'town’ area. You finish this position with the right hand, holding the right tip, a few inches in front of the lower chest and the left hand, holding the wand at the town area, about head height. [Figure 120]

17.3 INHALE: SCOOP THE OAR TO THE RIGHT

Footwork

Transfer weight to the right foot, move the left foot behind and a little way to the right of the right foot as balance, landing and standing on the ball of the left foot. Maintain 50% weight on both feet.

Wand / Arms

Simultaneously, bring the wand back to the centre of the body, vertically, the left hand first sliding back home and then the right hand sliding to town position. Use the right hand, in the front of the body in front of the stomach, as a pivot as you move the left hand to the left and downward - which lifts the right tip upwards. You finish with the wand vertical, right hand slightly to the right of the body, arm bent, holding the wand in the town position and the left hand in in front of the stomach holding the left end. [Figure 121].

17.4 EXHALE: SCOOP THE OAR TO THE LEFT

Footwork

Lift the left foot and move it from behind the right foot and to the left at first - clockwise - then around to the right to set down slightly to the right front of the right foot, toes facing south east.

Wand / Arms

Simultaneously carry on moving the right tip upwards in a counter-clockwise circle, going from right to left as if tracing a clock face from 3pm to 9am. You finish with the right hand across the body, holding the wand at the town position and the left hand in front of the body, close to the abdomen and under the right forearm. [Figure 122].

17.5 INHALE: PREPARE TO SET OAR DOWN LEFT

Footwork

Return the left foot to the side of the right foot and place weight 50% on both feet.

Wand / Arms

Simultaneously, move the right tip upwards and back to the right side of the body as if tracing a clock face, going from 9am to 4pm, as your right hand also slides back to the home position. You are now standing with wand horizontal, both arms holding the tips in home position. [Figure 123].

17.6 EXHALE: SET OAR DOWN LEFT

Footwork

Transfer weight to the left foot, move the right foot behind and a little way to the left of the left foot as balance, landing and standing on the ball of the foot. Maintain 50% weight on both feet.

Wand / Arms

Simultaneously, push to the left with the right hand, loosening the grip with your left hand. As the wand travels left, twist your left hand so that your palm turns outward - thereby moving the left tip upwards. The wand finishes vertical with the right hand having travelled horizontally to the left - outside the left hip. The left arm is outstretched - just above head height to the left side of the body and about 15 inches away from it. Look up at the right tip. [Figure 124]

[Figure 124]

Footwork

Bring the left foot back parallel with the right, both toes facing south. Home position.

Wand / Arms

Bring the right hand horizontally to the right, lowering the left hand and sliding it back to wand’s left 'home’ position. [Figure 125].
